An elderly Brooklyn man is in critical condition after being struck by a New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) bus on Monday. According to police, the 87-year-old was struck in the middle of the crosswalk on East 12th Street in Sheepshead Bay by a B36 bus making a left-hand turn from Avenue Z. Nearby surveillance footage captured the collision, which shows the man thrown out of his shoes and left pinned under the bus.

He was rushed to New York University Langone Brooklyn with traumatic injuries and is listed in critical condition, police said. The bus driver was also transported to an area hospital to be treated for emotional trauma. Officers with the Highway Collision Investigation Squad said the driver remained at the scene after the collision and was cooperating with the investigation. Per MTA protocol, the driver was also tested for drug and alcohol consumption. No charges or arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.

In New York, pedestrians have the right of way when crossing the street within marked or unmarked crosswalks, particularly when traffic signals indicate it is safe to cross. State and city laws require all drivers, including public transit operators, to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.

In busy intersections, even a brief distraction or failure to look can result in life-altering injuries, particularly when involving large vehicles such as buses. Failure to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks can result in severe legal consequences, especially when an accident with injury or death results. If you or a loved one have been injured by a negligent driver while walking in the city, the skilled Brooklyn pedestrian accident lawyers at Rubenstein & Rynecki can protect your rights and help you seek the justice you deserve.
