A mother and her two young children were struck and killed while crossing a Brooklyn street on Saturday. Her third child was hospitalized in critical condition. The crash occurred on Ocean Parkway off Quentin Road in Midwood. A total of 10 people, including six children, were injured and transported to area hospitals.

According to the Brooklyn Police, an Audi driver, operating on a suspended license, rear-ended a Toyota Camry. The collision sent the Audi into the pedestrians, who were in the crosswalk, before going airborne, overturning and landing upside down. The driver had to be extricated from the vehicle and was taken to the hospital in stable condition. The Toyota driver suffered minor injuries, as did an adult passenger and three children in the vehicle.

Residents of the area say speed is a constant concern on Ocean Parkway despite the 25-mile-per-hour signs or speed cameras. One witness described a motorcycle traveling at what he estimated to be over 60 miles per hour just moments before the car crash. They also say people often run through red lights and stop signs and do not obey speed limits.

Authorities are investigating whether the Audi driver was speeding or ran a red light and performed a preliminary breath test for possible intoxication. No arrests have been made at this time and an investigation is ongoing.
